Flaxseed Gel and Low Porosity Hair: Why Wash Day Gets Easier

The most common thing I hear from customers with low porosity hair is that wash day takes forever. Water beads on the hair instead of soaking in. The first shampoo barely lathers. It takes a second or third wash before anything foams, and by then you have been in the shower for half an hour. Then products sit on top for the rest of the week and the hair still feels dry.

The gel I make is water based, built on real flaxseed, and a lot of those same customers tell me the first wash suds up now. I wanted to understand why, so I went and read the research. Here is what is actually happening, and what flaxseed gel does and does not do about it.

What low porosity hair really is

Porosity is how easily your hair takes in and holds water. Low porosity hair has a cuticle that lies flat and tight, with very few gaps for water to get through. That is not damage. It is the opposite. It is what healthy, undamaged hair looks like on the outside.

There is a second piece that most porosity articles skip. Undamaged hair is coated in a thin layer of a fatty acid called 18-MEA that is chemically bonded to the outside of the cuticle. That layer is what makes healthy hair repel water. Researchers have measured this directly: the less 18-MEA on the surface, the more easily water wets the hair. Bleaching and alkaline treatments strip it off, which is why chemically damaged hair soaks up water instantly. Virgin, unprocessed hair keeps it, and beads water because of it.

So if you have low porosity hair, you have a flat cuticle and an intact fat layer. Water is going to sit on that surface for a while before it gets in no matter what you do. You cannot change the structure of your hair with a gel, and any product that says it will is not being honest with you.

Why the first wash does not lather

Here is the part that makes wash day slow, and it has nothing to do with your porosity.

Shampoo cleans by using surfactants, and surfactants make foam by lining up at the surface between air and water. Oils get in the way of that. When there is un-emulsified oil on the hair, it competes with the surfactant for that surface and knocks the foam down. Oil is so good at killing foam that it is literally used as an antifoaming agent in industry. The mechanism has been studied in detail: oil droplets get into the walls of the bubbles and break them.

What that means in your shower is simple. If your hair is coated in a butter, a heavy oil, or a silicone from last week, the first shampoo does not lather because it is busy emulsifying that coating. It is working. It just cannot foam while it works. The second wash foams because the oil is gone.

Low porosity hair makes this worse, because heavy products cannot get in and sit on the surface instead. That is why both the cosmetic science literature and dermatology sources give the same advice for low porosity hair: avoid heavy products that build up, and use lighter ones.

What flaxseed gel is made of

When you boil flaxseed in water, what comes out is mucilage. Chemically it is two polysaccharides, arabinoxylan and rhamnogalacturonan I, which is a technical way of saying long chains of sugars that grab and hold water. Food scientists classify flaxseed mucilage as a hydrocolloid, the same family as the thickeners that hold water in yogurt and ice cream. It forms a thin, flexible film when it dries, and because it is a water-soluble sugar chain, it dissolves right back into water when you rinse it.

My gel is that mucilage, plus slippery elm, which is another mucilage, plus glycerin and honey. Glycerin and honey are humectants. A 2022 study in Scientific Reports looked at exactly how glycerin holds water and found that it binds water tightly enough that the water stops evaporating at normal rates. On hair, that means the water you added stays on the strand longer instead of drying off in five minutes.

There is a small amount of jojoba and avocado oil in the gel for slip. They are light, they are a minor part of the formula, and they are dispersed in a water base rather than being the base.

So what does the gel actually do for low porosity hair

Three things, and none of them is "opening the cuticle."

It keeps water on the hair longer. Low porosity hair needs time with water. The mucilage film and the humectants hold that water against the strand instead of letting it evaporate, which gives it more of a chance to get in. This is why you apply it to soaking wet hair and not damp hair. The gel is not the moisture. The water is. The gel just makes the water stay.

It does not build up. Because it is water soluble, it rinses out with water and a normal shampoo. There is no oily film left behind to fight your next wash. That is the whole reason the first wash lathers again. You did not change your hair. You stopped coating it in something that kills foam.

It replaces the thing that was causing the problem. If a butter or a heavy gel was your styler, switching to a water-based gel removes the layer that was sitting on top all week. The hair wets faster on wash day because there is less on it, and products applied afterward have less to fight through.

What this looks like in practice

Customers describe it the same way every time: wash day is faster. The first shampoo foams. Hair gets wet in the shower instead of beading for ten minutes. Less product is needed because less of it is sitting on the surface.

If you want the most out of it on low porosity hair, apply it to soaking wet hair, use warmth when you can, and clarify every four to six weeks. Buildup is the low porosity tax, and it is what makes hair stop responding to everything.
